As I mentioned more than a month ago, I am reading the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, which starts with Guilty Pleasures. Onto book 2: The Laughing Corpse! I’m reading about 175 pages a week. Each week, I’ll be bringing you two posts: a review of the book and a related kinky post. This is my review of the book post!
Description from Good Reads: Harold Gaynor offers Anita Blake a million dollars to raise a 300-year-old zombie. Knowing it means a human sacrifice will be necessary, Anita turns him down. But when dead bodies start turning up, she realizes that someone else has raised Harold’s zombie–and that the zombie is a killer. Anita pits her power against the zombie and the voodoo priestess who controls it.
In The Laughing Corpse Anita will learn that there are some secrets better left buried-and some people better off dead…
The Laughing Corpse (Chapters 18-end)
I love how much growth Anita has in this book. She finds power even she didn’t know she had. Starting the series when she’s already ~4 years into her job is a good choice, I think, because too often we have series where the main character is just finding out about their powers. It’s not bad (hell, I’ve done it myself), but I think it makes Anita Blake stand out. Anita still has room to grow, but this story is mostly wrapped up in a neat little bow by Chapter 18. Even so, I’m anxious to start the next book. There are enough threads to make me really interested in continuing.
Here is the link to my very rough notes about the first half of the book, including notes on characters and plot. It’s mostly for me, but if you had read it in the past and just need a refresher, it would suffice, though it doesn’t read nicely!
