As I mentioned a few months ago, I am reading the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, which starts with Guilty Pleasures. Onto book 9: Obsidian Butterfly! I’m reading about 175 pages a week, so this book is going to be broken into three parts. Each week, I’ll be bringing you two posts: a review of the book and a related kinky post. This is my review of the book post! For those who are new to my blog, you don’t need to read the books to read the kinky stories on Fridays, and of course, you’re welcome to check out my reviews on Sundays!
Description from Amazon: There are a lot of monsters in Anita Blake’s life. And some of them are human. One such individual is the man she calls Edward, a bounty hunter who specializes in the preternatural. He calls her to help him hunt down the greatest evil she has ever encountered – something that kills and maims and vanishes into the night. Something Anita will have to face alone.
#9 Obsidian Butterfly (Ch 1-23)
Non-spoilery Review:
This is the first book I don’t have much of any memory of. In my multiple re-reads where I keep starting over, I at least remembered basic story lines or who the Big Bad was or glimpses of major end scenes. But this one…no memory. I have a name that wiggles in the back of my mind, but I don’t remember anything about it.
Interestingly, I noticed two story inconsistencies in this book. One was minor (“she never told me”… Four pages later, “she had warned me”) and the other kind of big. In Blue Moon, Anita traveling was a Big Fucking Deal because of her connection to Jean Claude. But in this book, she drops everything on almost page 1 to travel. And in this part of the book, she meets the Master of the City, Obsidian Butterfly (title of the book!). There’s mention that she’s Jean Claude’s, but it’s not that big of a deal.
In any case, my lack of memory of this book has led me to be up long past my bedtime reading because I can’t put it down. It’s just…so good. So compelling. I want to know what happens next. I need to know. Ugh! But now, I should go to sleep. It’s not The Neverending Story. It’ll be there tomorrow. Goodnight!
Here is the link to my very rough notes about this part of the book, including notes on characters and plot. It’s mostly for me, but if you had read it in the past and just need a refresher, it would suffice, though it doesn’t read nicely!
