The Insecure Writer's Support Group

We’re back for a second month of The Insecure Writer’s Support Group! We’re mostly even on time for this one!

If you’d like to chime in and let us know your answers to the questions or drop a link to your post if you’re participating, please do so in the comments! And check out the IWSG website for more answers!

May 5 – Have any of your readers ever responded to your writing in a way that you didn’t expect? If so, did it surprise you?

Jayden:

Yes, absolutely. For starters, I’m always surprised when someone is really into what I write. Generally speaking, I write fluff. It’s low on storyline and high on smut. It’s what I like to write, so I do it. I’ve acknowledged to myself that I will never be a high profile writer because I don’t write the types of things that get that sort of attention, as a general rule. And I’m okay with that. But it always surprises me when someone really likes what I’ve written.

I’m sure there have also been times when I’ve been surprised by a comment, or someone took something in a way I didn’t intend. For example, in my first A to Z set this year, I wrote a random woman into the train ride and everyone is wondering what this woman’s ulterior motives are. I’m wondering that, too! She wasn’t meant to be a main character or a villain or anything. She was just…a woman on the train. But if I ever do finish that story, she’s going to have to have a major part. My readers are expecting it!

Richard:

I’m just surprised anybody wants to read anything I write. One time I wrote a piece that was a little suggestive, but not smutty, and was informed that it was “orange.” I guess that’s like, colorful, but not as bad as blue? I dunno, I don’t have a good answer for this one.

  1. As a writer, I’ve had random characters appear that turn into important ones, but not had any readers suggest it. That sounds like fun! And yes, I know the feeling of “I’m just surprised anybody wants to read anything I write”.
    Happy IWSG Day!
