Andee
I was literally holding my breath. Had I really just told my best friend that I was in love with her? Yes, yes I did. I felt my whole body break out in a cold sweat. I wondered what Krystal would think of my clammy hands. What if I just ruined the best friendship I’d ever had? All the thoughts and doubts swirled in my head. It felt like minutes went by, but I was pretty sure it could only have been seconds. I suddenly wished we hadn’t gotten up on the couch. If I were sitting on the floor, I couldn’t slide off when my body went limp.
“You’re in love with me?” Krystal asked.
I tried to say yes, but my mouth was so dry. I nodded instead.
Krystal was silent, her eyes searching my face. “I don’t know what to say.”
I felt tears well up behind my eyes, but I blinked rapidly trying to keep them at bay.
She squeezed my hands more tightly. “Andee, you’re my best friend.”
That didn’t sound good. I could feel my heart pound harder.
“I feel like I’ve known you forever. Do you remember that time we went to the grocery store together, and we were so loud I thought we were going to get kicked out?”
Krystal had a habit of going off on tangents, but the temporary change of topic allowed me to get control of myself and make my mouth work enough to say, “Yeah.”
“We were ridiculous that night. Laughing, joking, cursing. And we weren’t even drinking!”
I nodded. “I think it was you who was the loud one,” I managed to tease.
She laughed, her whole body rocking. She let go of my hands. “You might be right about that one,” she conceded. “I am usually the loud one in any group, but especially with you. You’re so quiet.”
“I know,” I said. “But I like listening to you talk.”
She grinned at me. “It’s why we’re a perfect balance for each other.” She paused, and then looked at me seriously. “Anyway, that night at the grocery store, you were actually loud. Loud enough that you were embarrassed when someone looked at us. When I’m the embarrassing one, you just roll your eyes at me and brush it off. But you were participating that night. And you were just so cute. Your cheeks and your chest get all red.” As she referenced my blush zones, she touched them lightly, and I felt my skin grow warm. “Andee, you’re blushing,” she whispered.
I nodded again. “Why are we talking about the grocery store?”
“Because that was the night I knew that I was in love with you.”
