For this year’s A to Z Blog Challenge, Richard and Jayden are worldbuilding! Using Rebekah Loper‘s book The A-Zs of Worldbuilding as a guide, we have teamed up to give descriptions of the world we’re creating, along with snippets of what it’s like to exist in the world. Enjoy!

The society grows all of their plant-based food in an area adjacent to their mountain home that has high walls to keep the predators out (though there are occasionally flying dinosaurs, of course). They also have some underground chambers that are climate controlled so they can grow some of the warmer weather crops. They don’t have anyone to trade with outside their community, or so the average person thinks. They do have some livestock, but fresh meat is a rarity. They use a variety of spices to give the food lots of flavor. Yes, they do eat dinosaurs when they’re able to capture or hunt one.

“If you told me a year ago that I’d be building ‘scarecrows’ to chase away dinosaurs, I’d have called you crazy,” said Michelle.

“And what do you say now?” asked Phil.

“I’d say a fifty cal will scare away just about anything, but it’s probably cheating,” she flipped up her welding mask and took a step back, examining the “scarecrow.”

It stood a full ten feet tall over the broccoli patch. The frame was reclaimed scrap metal from an old gasoline powered truck, arranged in a roughly humanoid shape. It was draped in several pairs of tattered overalls stitched together. But instead of holding a pitchfork, a Browning M2 was roughly cradled where its arms would be. 

“Still a shame we couldn’t put a hat on it,” said Phil, nodding to the radome head.

“I’m willing to sacrifice style points to keep the pterodactyls out of the farm, especially if it means we can get a couple hundred pounds of chicken wings,” Michelle said, then walked over to the pen on the side of the field. She took a crook off the wall and hooked it around a sheep, leading it out towards the broccoli patch.

“What’re you doing with that?” asked Phil.

“Pterodactyls aren’t going to come for our broccoli, but if we give them a little bait…”

“You’re trying to attract dinosaurs to the field?”

“Can’t eat ‘em otherwise.”

“I think the only thing crazier than a scarecrow for dinosaurs is a scarecrow you build to attract dinosaurs.”

“You’ll change your mind once you taste my barbecue sauce,” Michelle said. “Now get out of the field, I want to run a couple tests before nightfall.”
