Eventually Ever After: Part 4

by Jayden

After our kiss, okay, several kisses, we got back to work. At least, for a little while.

“May I please go pee, Sir?” I asked. I had been asking him for permission to pee for… I don’t know how long. A few weeks, I think. It was another thing with us that I don’t know how it happened, but it did. I suppose it was probably in response to some kind of fiction I wrote and a text conversation we had. Nick wasn’t into water sports, so I had no one to play with, and Richard was. Richard was happy to give me permission (or not) to pee. It was hot.

“You may,” he said.

I groaned.

“What’s wrong?”

“My pants are soaked through,” I said. “Putting them back on is going to be gross.”

“Do you want another pair of pants?” he asked.

“Oh, maybe,” I said.

“You can let yours dry out before you have to go. Let me see what I have.”

He rummaged around in his drawers and came up with a pair of pants that had Batman logos on them. I went into the bathroom, did my thing, and put them on. There was no full-length mirror in there, but I put them on and looked down, and all I could think was that they made my thighs look massive.

I was very insecure about my body. I rarely, if ever, felt attractive. One of my biggest concerns with meeting Richard the way I had was that he hadn’t really seen me in person much. What if he didn’t like the way I looked when he saw me naked? What if he didn’t like my thighs and ass?

I almost took the pants off and put my wet ones back on, but then I decided…fuck it. He hadn’t seen me naked yet, but if he didn’t like me in the pants, he definitely wasn’t going to like me naked.

Eventually Ever After: Part 3

by Jayden

I could continue on in journal style, but I think it would be a lot more fun if I give you a more… fictionalized version. Snippets, scenes, and stories that are, if not 100% accurate, pretty close. I’ve definitely had to fill in the gaps in my memory sometimes, and I’m sure the dirty talk isn’t exactly the words we said, but it’s pretty close. Richard has definitely said all of them in some combination or other.

So we’ll start with our first time…

The night before, Richard and I had spent some time without Nick. It was all public stuff. We had some gifts to give to a mutual friend, so I picked him up, and we went over to her apartment. But with the pandemic and everything, it was a quick, socially distanced visit. Even so, she realized how much alike Richard and I were. It was uncanny. Although he had interacted with her online before, they hadn’t spent much time together in person.

It had been nice to be able to talk with Richard without anyone else around. We had been skirting lines for a while. I wasn’t supposed to cyber with anyone, and we came…close. Very close. But we hadn’t totally crossed that line, at least.

I had lingered over slightly deflated tires, taking my time pumping them up with my portable pump. And then I had to go inside and wash my hands, of course.

We talked a lot, and we hugged, but we didn’t kiss. And we didn’t cross any lines.

“I want to go write at Richard’s,” I told Nick that morning. He looked at me with narrow eyes. “I can’t get anything done here.” Our house was always busy, especially during the lockdown where no one had anywhere else to be.

“Okay,” he said. I couldn’t tell if he was actually okay with it or not, but that was typical. He didn’t express himself well.

I said that I would be back in time for dinner, packed up my stuff, and off I went. Richard and I did a pretty good job of focusing on our writing and following the rules. Mostly.

Eventually Ever After: Part 2

by Jayden

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away.

No, that’s not it.

I suppose I could go all the way back to high school, really. I suppose I should, in fact. When I was 17, it occurred to me that I needed to date more people. I needed to experience life. So I broke up with my boyfriend and started dating. I turned 18, graduated high school, and dated six people that summer before I went off to college. Most of them were fleeting, but one stuck around.

Nick and I started talking online and quickly formed a bond. We accidentally met in person when we both attended the same event, and then we started hanging out regularly. But the catch was that he was married. He and his wife had an open relationship, and she knew everything we did. In fact, she knew so much partially because she controlled everything.

I spent much of that summer at their house. I got to know their kids, and I became friends with his wife. And then I went off to college. Once I was out of her grasp and she couldn’t control me anymore, things went to hell.

There I was, 300 miles away, 18 years old, with a 33-year-old boyfriend who was married with kids. Oof.

I could wax on for pages and pages and pages. In fact, I did. I kept a journal throughout that time that ended up being about 120 single-spaced typed pages. Ha! It was a lot of teenage bull shit, honestly. I read through a lot of it last year.

So when I say “long story short,” I truly mean very long story short.

The whole time that we were apart, we were both dating other people. Actually, I think I was more so than Nick. But eventually, Nick did as well. I ended up dating someone pretty seriously. We considered marriage, but in the end, he wasn’t someone I would want to spend the rest of my life with.

By the time I was a senior in college, Nick and I weren’t dating anyone else, and I was hoping that we would get engaged. We did end up getting engaged and eventually married. We identified being “poly” and dabbled in dating other people. As it turned out, we decided that it was better for us to date together. Sounds good, right?

Ehhhhh.

Eventually Ever After: Part 1

by Jayden

Those of you who have been around a while know that I used to do this blog solo. But “doing this blog” is a stretch, honestly. I created it to write for the A to Z Blog Challenge, which I quickly became a host for. But in between April A to Z, my posts were sparse. One year I managed to do a daily update on my NaNo words, but that’s about it. Otherwise, I have been super inconsistent.

Back in November, I met (and started dating) someone from my writing group, and we quickly realized that we write some of the same types of content and have similar writing styles. I asked if he would be interested in joining me as a co-blogger. And thus, my partnership with Richard was formed.

We started writing together officially in January (though we wrote often in December so we would have things ready to post) and continued dating. Throughout the last few months, TMI Tuesday has made it pretty clear that we’re in a relationship, not that it was a secret, but it was to many of my personal family and friends.

See, my husband and I were poly (“were” – did you catch that past tense?), and because of my job situation, I have kept my personal life, well, personal. Even my daughter didn’t know. She knew Richard, she’d met him many times, but she didn’t know we were involved. We were going to tell her, and then we didn’t, and in the end, it worked out that we didn’t say anything to her. If you had talked to October Jayden and explained what things would look like even in February, she would NOT have believed you, and she certainly would not have believed you if you told her where she would be in August.

But this blog is mostly anonymous. A few of my friends know it’s me, but there’s nothing I would say here that they don’t already know. So as Richard and I discussed ways that we can increase posting to the blog, he encouraged me to be more raw and honest with my readers and tell you the story of what’s actually going on in my life.

With the exception of TMI Tuesday, I’ve been pretty strictly focused on fiction. And that’s great, definitely in my comfort zone. But my life is interesting, and in fact, I am going to write it into a novel. It will probably be partially fictionalized, but the story is interesting. In April, I wrote a novel that was loosely based on my life and experiences, but there were so many parts that were SO far out there, it would be unbelievable.

So if you’re interested in hearing about the stranger than fiction story of how this blogger came to be where she is today, come back every Saturday from now until ?? to hear the tale.

Be sure to come back tomorrow to see some new collaboration from Richard and Jayden!

Unknown – Erotic Short Story

Please enjoy this erotic short story by Jayden:

I stood on the balcony, looking out over the city. It was beautiful. The breeze on the hotel balcony made me shiver just a touch. I crossed my arms, wrapping them around myself. I thought about getting a jacket or just going inside, but I didn’t want to. My nipples hardened under my sheer shirt as I looked out into the dark.

I heard the door open and shut. I turned to look, but I couldn’t see the door. “Hey,” I called, assuming it was my Dominant back from a drink at the bar. He’d invited me to join him, but I was more interested in not putting on real clothes.

He didn’t respond, but I figured the wind probably stole my voice away.

I turned back and looked out over the city again. The tiny people walking on the sidewalk looked no bigger than ants. I breathed in deeply and could smell the salt of the sea air. I closed my eyes to focus on the glorious scent.

I had left the door to the hotel room propped open, and I heard someone step through. My Dom, of course.

His hands wrapped around me, and the first tingle of fear slid down my spine. Maybe this wasn’t my Dom. In fact, I knew it wasn’t. His hands were different. He was taller. Before I could finish processing it, his hand was over my mouth. “Pineapple,” he whispered in my ear, and I knew that it was okay. Whoever he was, my Dom had sent him. It was our safe word.

Before I knew what was happening, he slipped a blindfold over my eyes. I tried to see out of the corners, but there wasn’t anything to see.

“Put your hands on the railing and don’t move them.”

Z is for Zoology

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

This is a bit of a downer, since there isn’t a lot of zoology in Zebulon. Animals have all but died out. There are no predators outside. There aren’t bugs inside the buildings, though some survived outside of it.

So, let’s take this opportunity to sum up Zebulon for Z!

A society born from a nuclear winter wasteland, populated by some determined humans who figured out how to survive. Science saved them long enough for them to develop the technology to go underground, generate power, and grow food. Although their lives weren’t ideal, they survived and managed to keep the species alive. Now, they have a thriving city and nine others besides who are able to keep living in the wasteland humans created. It’s unlikely the Earth will ever be habitable normally again, but at least for now, they can live a comfortable existence.

The best part, after the division of generations, they have come together as a community under the banner of equality and community. Everyone works together to ensure all members of the Zebulon community can thrive.

But, the science (fiction) of the community isn’t the focus. Mara is the focus. Mara, who has just turned 18 and is about to find out all there is that her community has to offer. She has spent years learning to cook, care for a home, sew, use technology, solve problems, and work together. But now she has to learn a trade and figure out what the hell she wants in a partner. Or, if she wants a partner? There are so many possibilities, and as soon as she turned 18, all of those possibilities are open to her. So, what will she pick and what challenges will she face along the way?

Well, you’ll just have to read to find out.

Y2020

Y is for Youth

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

This is the crux of this society. Youth is revered, especially after there was a dry spell where no new children were born. It was a scary time for their community. Now, things have leveled off, and they try to make sure there aren’t too many new children, so they are overburdened, but it’s usually handled naturally. Birth control is nearly 100% effective, so when the community is overburdened with children, they can request residents to use birth control until they have more space in their nurseries. It’s always optional, though.

Infants stay with their mother for the first three months, and then they are placed into childcare centers. The centers are there to help the children develop community skills. It’s important to the community that children aren’t isolated.

The parents are encouraged to visit their children often, and the children will also go visit their parents at least once a week, if they want to. But most of the childcare is handled in their dorms.

The children are separated into rooms with 1-3 other children when they’re about 5 or 6 (depending on when they’re ready). They are given their bedrooms when they start to mature and hit puberty around 10 or 11. By 16, they are given a room in a pod where they live with other people and have to start cooking for themselves under strict guidance. At 18, they are on their own with their floormates. At 18 they are considered young adults and are encouraged to experiment with their sexuality and preferences. Before that, they are encouraged to form platonic relationships, but they are given a pill that allows them to physically mature but keeps their sex drive down so they can mature emotionally first.

They are given a series of tests from age 18 to 22 (called young adults) and at 22 they are given their relationship assignments. These assignments are made once a year so that the Matchmakers can match everyone at once. Sometimes older people are also put in the pool so a match isn’t guaranteed to be between people of the same age.

Chapter 7: Another Meeting

I broke the kiss immediately. “I’m coming!” I called. Fuck. “I forgot about the meeting,” I whispered.

“Me, too,” James said.

I climbed off of his lap, and we both stood up. “Do I look okay?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he said, “you’re perfect.”

I wondered briefly if there was more to that statement than whether I looked okay to go to the meeting or not.

“Come on,” he said, and he took my hand and pulled me to my door.

He opened it, and we went into the living room. Thankfully, my room was basically the closest to the meeting room, so it wasn’t a long walk. Carla was waiting for me.

“There you are!” she said.

“Sorry,” I hissed.

I surveyed the room and saw that Carla and Jean had saved a spot for me. I glanced at James, but he just nodded in their direction. I took my seat between my two pod-mates, and James went and sat on another couch facing me.

“Are we all here now?” Kelly asked. I watched her do a quick headcount and see that 12 seats were occupied. “Great, let’s begin,” she said. Kelly was our mentor. We didn’t need a mentor officially now that we were year 18s, and this was supposed to be her last meeting in charge. “To make things easier, we’re going to show you a video about what to expect over the next few weeks. Then I’ll be able to give you your career choice results.”

I felt a cold sweat slide down my spine. I wanted the career choices first, but no, the video first.

She picked up the remote and it started playing immediately.

The black screen flared to life, and the words “Congratulations Year 18s!” slid across the screen in blue letters. One of the actors I had seen many times over the years appeared.

“Hello! I know you’re anxious to get your career assignments, year 18s, but please stick with me. I just have a few things to go over first. You may have already noticed that your daily vitamins are different. If you haven’t started feeling different, you will soon. The vitamins you were taking ensured that your bodies could develop before your sexual emotions. But those blockers have been removed. We encourage you all to visit the Exploration Floor with some of your fellow year 18s and explore each other. There are toys and supplies in the dressers in the Exploration Rooms. Your identification cards will now give you access to that floor. Also, your TVs, as well as the ones in the Exploration Rooms, have more channels available to you. You may be interested in learning some things from those videos.

“As always, if you have any questions, you are encouraged to explore together. Your mentor and your family may also be able to answer your questions. And now, without further ado, your mentor will provide you with your first career assignments.

“Please remember that if you want to change your careers, you will be given that opportunity in six months. Thank you!”

The screen went black, and Kelly took the center of the room. “So,” she said, “when I call your name, please come forward and take your envelope. Instructions for your first day of your job are included. Once you have your envelope, you’re dismissed, but I’ll be around afterward if you have any questions.”

What career does she get?

X2020

X is for Xenial

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

There aren’t a lot of guests in Zebulon. Once a month, one building hosts representatives from the other buildings in their common space. No one stays overnight in that situation because they live close enough to go home. There are certain customs that they observe. Every floor makes a dish to share with the guests so there is amble food for their day-long meeting. They are more likely to show off their best dishes, but they all have the same ingredients, so it’s not usually that spectacular. They can make specialty desserts though.

Four times a year, the cities come together and send ten representatives. There are 10 cities. (10 cities, 20 representatives, 1 from each of the 20 residential buildings) makes 200 people.

Those meetings are held on a rotating basis so that every city hosts once every 5 years. At the time they host, they have to make a lot of space. People will stay together with extra people in their rooms if they have to. Representatives from close cities will often go back to their city after the meeting, but not everyone is that close.

I jumped up off the bed and ran out of the room. James’ room was just on the other side of the living room. I could take the long way around and avoid the living room, which I seriously considered, but the living room was empty.

I rushed through and practically fell into James’ door.

He opened it as though he had been waiting for me. “Mara!” he said, and he opened the door wider so I could enter. His room was furnished the same way as mine. I sat down in his desk chair.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

I should have thought of a lie before I went over there, but I didn’t.

“What did Lori want?”

“I—uh—she wanted to talk to me about my job.”

“Why didn’t she just wait until tomorrow?”

“That’s what I said,” I latched onto that idea and rolled my eyes. “I don’t know. You know how Lori is.”

He nodded. “I can’t believe we got interrupted again.”

“I know,” I said.

He sat down on the couch and gestured for me to join him.

“Are you all packed?” I asked, ignoring the gesture.

He shrugged. “Enough. I don’t need much.”

I nodded.

“Mara, come here.”

“I-I’d better not,” I said. “I just, I just came to say goodbye.”

“Mara,” he said, this time his voice was disappointed. “You make it sound like it’s goodbye forever.”

“No, not forever,” I said. “Just for a few weeks.”

“You’ll be so busy with your new job that you won’t even know I’m gone.”

I highly doubted that.

“Mara, come here, please, I won’t bite.”

I couldn’t resist him. I didn’t want to. I moved and sat down next to him on the couch. Wrapping his arms around me, he inhaled my scent.

“Can’t we pick up where we left off?”

“Why, so someone else can knock on the door?” I scoffed.

“Then we’ll go. We can go up to the Exploration Floor. There have to be plenty of open rooms. Or let them knock. I’ll ignore it.”

I smiled at him and rested my hand against his jaw. “James,” I said, “it’s a lovely thought.”

His expression fell. “You don’t want to pick up where we left off, do you?” he asked.

I took a deep breath. “I just think that maybe now isn’t the right time,” I said.

I could see the frustration cross his features. “But Mara, I leave for three weeks in the morning.”

I nodded. “And I’ll see you when you get back.”

He stood up and scrubbed his hand through his hair. He left it standing on end, and I couldn’t help but be reminded of how it had looked after I had had my hands all in it.

I wanted to tell him the whole truth. I wanted to tell him about my Special Assignment, but I was afraid that I would be in trouble. Lori told me not to tell, and she had the power to change my assignment. I knew she did. And I didn’t want that. As much as I was fucking terrified of learning all these new things on camera for other residents to see, I wanted to learn. I wanted the opportunities that this job afforded me. And I knew that such a great opportunity wouldn’t come along lightly.

“Mara,” he said, and then he dropped to his knees in front of me, “what did Lori say that scared you off?”

I must be so transparent. “Nothing,” I protested, but the word felt false in my mouth.

He cocked his head to the side and took my hands in his. He waited, letting the silence stretch between us.

“When you get back, maybe things will be different,” I said.

“Maybe,” he repeated my word back to me. “What is that supposed to mean?”

I had no idea how long I would be on this Special Assignment. For all I knew, they would take me away, and I wouldn’t even be back when James was. “I’m so confused, James, I’m sorry.”

As much as there had been so many emotions in the last few hours, the worst of it was this. Seeing the hurt look on James’ face, knowing that he wanted to explore things with me, knowing that he wanted me to be his first, and knowing that that wasn’t going to happen. Seeing that look cross his face, telling me that he knew I wasn’t going to wait for him. And the worst part of all: not being able to tell him the truth behind the reason.

He let go of my hands and hauled me into his arms, our bodies pressing against one another. He kissed the top of my head.

“Mara, you have been my best friend as long as I can remember. If the time is right, then it will happen. This just isn’t our time.” I could hear the strain in his voice, the effort the words took. Tears stung my eyes, and I tried to blink them away.

“Thank you, James, thank you.”

He kissed me on the top of my head again. “Now you’d better go before your lips tempt me any more.”

I giggled, and a sob caught in my throat. But I couldn’t help it. I wrapped my arms around his neck, kissed his lips lightly, and then said, “Goodbye, James.”

I left him standing in his room, his arms still poised to hold me, his lips still molded in the shape of my mouth.

W2020

W is for Weapons & Warfare

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

There are no weapons in Zebulon. There are regular kitchen knives, but there’s nothing else. Fighting isn’t encouraged in any way, and activities that appear like fighting have long been abandoned. There is no archery, and certainly no guns. The people who are responsible for keeping the peace (police) aren’t given anything like that. They are trained in hand to hand combat, but mostly in techniques to diffuse situations.

And those are their real weapons: community building, mental healthcare, medical healthcare, equality. There’s no need for weapons because there’s no need for conflict that can’t be resolved in another way.

Above you see my description that I wrote based on the extensive questions in The A-Zs of Worldbuilding. Weapons and War aren’t really featured in this novel, so read on for a random excerpt from Chapter 20 in Exploration: An Erotic Novel.

He started running the bathwater and stepped into the tub. He helped me in, and we sat down as the water poured in around us. It was loud enough that we didn’t try to talk over it. We just let the warmth surround us. We sat side by side, his arm around me, my head resting on his shoulder. I wondered about the irony if we just sat here talking all night instead of having sex. How much would it piss Nicole off? I almost giggled at the thought, but I knew I couldn’t share it with him with the cameras on, so I stifled it. He turned off the water, and the silence was deafening.

But I should have known it wasn’t a concern. We had formed a great connection in the half-hour we spent on the couch, but that whole time, we were sitting near each other, specifically not touching. Now that we were touching again, I could feel my body responding to him.

He leaned down and kissed my temple and then started to trail kisses along my jaw. I moaned with pleasure. He kissed my lips, but it was just a light kiss. We couldn’t get a deeper kiss from that angle, just as before.

I moved to straddle him, his cock already getting hard. I adjusted my hips so that he slid along my slit, but didn’t get inside me. Not yet. We kissed, and this one was not light. His tongue probed my mouth, one hand pressing my head firmly against his. His other wrapped around my waist, controlling my movements. My hands rested on his biceps. They were huge, and I loved feeling the hard muscle under his skin.

Without meaning to, my hips started to move, little adjustments at first, but then more rhythmic movements. His cock was starting to get dangerously close to entering me again. I wasn’t sure that I cared, but he released my head and put both hands on my hips so he could stop me.

“Not so fast, Mara,” he teased.

I pouted at him. “I want to feel your cock inside me,” I said. I wanted to whisper it. I wanted only him to hear it, but I knew that Nicole would likely make me repeat myself, so I made sure to raise my voice loud and clear.

“Soon, baby, soon,” he said. “But I won’t have sex with you until I get you off at least once.”

I whimpered. I remembered the power of the orgasm from earlier, and I wanted that again. I almost wasn’t sure my body could handle another one, or more! He said, ‘at least’!

V is for Visual Arts

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

There is almost nothing too taboo for Zebulon. Sexuality is revered. Nudity is normal. Public sex is encouraged. Many people invest a lot of time in relationships, both emotional and sexual.

But other hobbies exist, too. There’s theater, movies (though not very many), porn is popular. As mentioned before, music, art, writings are all common hobbies. The resources to do those things are readily available. No one takes more than they are actively using, so there aren’t squabbles for things. If a resource gets short, they can put in an order and the scientists and manufacturing work on making those resources more available.

He sat down on my two-seater sofa. I sat down next to him. We had spent so much time in my room or his watching TV or playing games—countless hours. But now I was aware of my every move. My thigh was touching his thigh. Did it always do that when we sat here?

James picked up the remote and flicked on the TV. “Do you want to watch something?” he asked.

I shrugged. I didn’t care. I focused on the screen as he scrolled through the different options.

“Mara!” he said, his voice excited.

“What?”

“Look!”

I was looking, but I wasn’t seeing whatever he was seeing. “What?” I said again.

“You have the porn channels now.”

I blinked at the screen. He was right. There, right at the top of the list, was the same video we had been watching upstairs.

James was looking at me now.

“What?”

“Do you want to watch the rest of it?”

“Yeah, okay,” I said.

He turned in on and fast-forwarded to the part where we had left off. The man was pushing the vibrator into the woman’s pussy. She was moaning with pleasure, and then she had an orgasm. Or at least, that’s what I thought it was. Kids talked, you know, so I had picked up a fair amount of vocabulary, but I had never experienced or seen any of this stuff. Her moans went up to a higher pitch, and her hands gripped the blanket of the bed beneath her. The man moved faster with the vibrator.

“Look at him fuck her with that thing,” James said, but I was sure he wasn’t talking to me.

I was suddenly embarrassed to be watching this with James. A blush crept up my cheeks, but he wasn’t looking at me.

He was focused on the woman on the screen. Her chest rose and fell faster, and the camera moved around so it was up close on her perky nipples as she sucked air into her lungs quickly. A fine sheen of sweat made her face and body shiny.

I could feel parts of my body low and deep, clenching in excitement. I had never had these feelings before. Why were they coming on so suddenly? Was it because of the video? Because of James? Because of the ceremony? And then I realized that James was looking at me. I met his gaze, and he licked his lips. “What?” I asked.

He blinked a couple of times quickly, and said, “I’m sorry, I just, I’ve never felt, I had no idea, I’m sorry.” He was practically stammering. James had always been a little awkward, and I thought it was cute, so his stammering wasn’t totally out of the ordinary with other people, but we had been so comfortable with each other as long as I could remember.

I put my hand on his arm and said, “What’s wrong, James?”

“My brother told me,” he said, taking a deep breath, “that our vitamins suppress our sexual desires.”

I had never heard that before. “What do you mean?”

“He told me that they switch our vitamin formulas when we get to year 18, and that’s why we suddenly have these feelings we’ve never had before.”

That explained a lot.

How were they watching porn before it was in her room?

There are communities like Zebulon that consist of 25 buildings and about 2000 people. There are about 20 of these cities all over what used to be the United States. Beyond that, they don’t know what exists. They have no way of contacting beyond their borders, and the seas are much more rough than they used to be, land travel has become nearly impossible with debris, so they stick to themselves and that’s fine.

They believe that other civilizations must have survived the nuclear winter, but they don’t know how many people or how well they survived.

Chapter 9: An Unexpected Visitor

I lay on the bed, panting, my shirt discarded on the floor. “Fuck,” I whispered. “Let’s ignore it.”

“What if it’s Kelly?”

I groaned. James rolled off of me, and I grabbed my shirt. “Just a minute,” I called, and then grumbled under my breath about why our mentor would be here now. I got it back on, smoothed out my hair, and opened the door to find someone I did not expect.

Lori was standing outside my door.

I blinked at her in surprise, not sure what to say. Why would the representative of our building be here?

“Hello, Mara,” she said, and her tone was very matter of fact.

“Lori, hi. What can I do for you?”

She looked past me and saw James, who had moved to sit on my couch. “Ah, James, I didn’t realize you were in here.”

“Hello, Lori,” he said politely. I looked at him and noticed that his hair was mussed in the back where I had had my fingers in it mere moments before.

“Are you all packed for tomorrow, James?”

“Not yet, but I will be.”

“Why don’t you go get started. I have some things I need to talk to Mara about,” she looked at him pointedly, “privately.”

“Sure,” James said as though it didn’t matter, but he gave me a sorrowful look.

Lori didn’t speak until the door was closed, and James’ footsteps had died away. “I assume you read your letter,” she said. She sat down on the couch and motioned for me to sit in my own desk chair like she owned the place.

“Yes, of course,” I replied.

“And I assume that you noticed there was a lot of missing information.”

“Yes,” I said. “I would have asked a question, but I wasn’t even sure what to ask.”

“I understand,” she said, and it sounded like she was trying to be motherly, but she was failing miserably. She was trying a half-hearted smile, though.

“So, why are you here, Lori?” I went for the direct approach.

“I wanted to give you some more details.”

Great. I waited.

What are the details?

Why did she send James away?

T is for Time

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

There aren’t particularly seasons, though there are sometimes more or less hurricanes and storms. Since they don’t go outside, it’s not a particular issue as long as their top floors aren’t damaged. Surveillance equipment is important, and the outsides of their buildings are watched so that people can go out and repair them as necessary. No one lives on their top floors so if major damage occurs, it doesn’t affect living spaces.

Their days are 24 hours, because that’s what days have always been, but they can’t see the sun, so it doesn’t matter. Their day is broken into thirds: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of recreation/personal time, and 8 hours of sleep. There’s an emphasis on getting enough sleep to be healthy.

Time is marked on clocks placed throughout their buildings, though watches are available for those who want them. Since their workdays are highly regulated to be only 8 hours, there isn’t a large need for vacations, but they still get two days off every week to do whatever they want. They can’t go away on vacations, really, so there isn’t a need for extended vacations. Sick days are taken on an as-needed basis, though most illnesses are able to be treated quickly if they haven’t been eradicated.

The community has stuck to time as close as they could to time Before. Seven day weeks with the same names as before, day and night. The lighting along the corridors is dimmed for the 8 sleeping hours, but there are people who work those hours (medical, emergency, police, child-minders).

Part 2: Mara’s Special Assignment

Chapter 11: First Day

I slept restlessly. I didn’t want to oversleep on my first day as an actress! I had set an alarm, even though I had never overslept before, but with my new job on the line, I was nervous. Or maybe the nerves had nothing to do with worrying about oversleeping and everything to do with what my job assignment was really going to entail.

Thirty minutes before my alarm, I gave up on lying in bed and got up. The nice part about being up early was that I didn’t have to worry about fighting for the shower with Jean and Carla. I had been sharing space with people literally my whole life, but it would be nice to have more showers. Usually it wasn’t an issue, and we had worked things out when it was, but I hadn’t talked to them about what their schedules looked like last night.

When I was done with my shower, I grabbed my letter and went out to the kitchen. I hoped that James would be there cooking breakfast as usual, but he wasn’t. I thought about going to his door, but we had said goodbye last night, and I wasn’t sure I wanted a repeat performance.

I poured myself some cereal and sat down at the dining room table. Others started to filter out as I ate, but no one seemed to be particularly chatty. When I was finished, I put my dishes in the dishwasher and looked at the clock on the wall. My letter said that I should leave my apartment at 8. It was only 7:30. But, I decided it was better to be early than late, so I went to the elevator anyway.

I followed the directions in my letter that told me to go down to the tunnels to Zebulon 14, Floor 10, Room 10. I lived in Zebulon 9, which was just one building away from 14. I got to the first floor and signed out in the lobby. It was standard for us to sign in and out of buildings in case of emergencies. It was as simple as an ID card swipe.

I realized that when I exited Zebulon 9, I was looking right at 14, but I had to walk around to the other side to get in. Each building only had one access point on the south side of the building.

The tunnels were well lit, with frequent maps. Fans generated fresh air, so there was always a low hum. There were a lot of people bustling about. Many jobs started at 8, so there were a lot of people going to their jobs. Most jobs worked on three shifts, starting at 8 am, 4 pm, and midnight. There were variations, of course, but with how strict our schedules were that no one worked more than eight hours a day, it was pretty standard. I had learned in school that people used to be compensated with money for work, but we had no such thing in Zebulon. Everyone worked in some capacity for eight hours a day. We worked five days on, two days off. We were given choices on our jobs and automated things people didn’t want to as much as possible. If there was a job that was critical that no one wanted, there was a rotation made so that everyone helped out at some point. I only partially paid attention when they talked about jobs at meetings. I would figure it all out soon enough.

It only took me a minute to walk the length of the building, and then I entered the lobby. It was very similar to mine, but someone was waiting to greet me at the desk. Residential lobbies were rarely staffed. We just swiped in and out when we left.

S2020

S is for Science

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

Science is heavily pursued. There are science and technology centers that focus on the advancement of it. They have advanced medical technology, and that is where they have focused their attention. Cancer is a thing of the past. People don’t tend to die of medical issues until they are of advanced age.

There isn’t a focus on *things*, particularly. Their furniture is basic, but comfortable. It’s deemed unnecessary to try to make more variety of those things. It’s not essential to survival, so it doesn’t matter.

The essential things are medical advancements and food/nutrition. Without livestock and animals for protein and a food source, the plants have taken focus. Sustainability for generating power (which is mostly collected via wind), purifying water (which can be collected from outside), and safety of buildings have taken precedence.

Above you see my description that I wrote based on the extensive questions in The A-Zs of Worldbuilding. Unsurprisingly, my characters (who are totally focused on sex) are not focused on the science behind their food and living situations, and we’ve already addressed the food, which is admittedly not the highlight of the novel. So, bonus random chapter! I’m even going to give you the part that immediately follows my last post.

Chapter 17: My Virginity

He trailed kisses down my collarbone, across my chest, down my stomach, right to the waistband of my pants. He flicked his tongue along my bare skin there, and I shuddered. We worked together to get my pants and panties off. My shoes slipped off in the process, and I lay naked on the bed.

He stood up and looked down at me. “You are beautiful,” he said, and I felt a blush creep up my chest and face. Then he spread my legs. “No hair?” he said, his voice telling me he was surprised.

“Do you like it?” I asked. I wanted him to like it. Why did I care what he thought?

He nodded. “I would be fine with it either way, but I like it.” His fingertips fluttered along my legs up toward my pussy.

I was trembling. Then he reached my core, his fingers coming together across my bare pubic mound. He lay down and kissed where his fingers had just been. I gasped. Why was he kissing me there?

“Relax, Mara. Trust me. I want to make sure that your pussy is ready for my cock.”

I nodded. I still wasn’t sure what he meant, but I found that I did trust him.

He spread the folds of my slit and pressed his tongue against a little bundle of nerves. I gasped. “Do you like it when I lick your clit, Mara?”

“Yes,” I hissed. My hands reached out to grasp at something, but the sheets were pulled tight against the bed. I finally got a grip on the pillow beneath my head.

He flicked his tongue across my clit over and over again, and I thought I was going to lose my mind. And then he stopped. I watched him lick one finger, and then he slipped it along my slit and into my pussy. It felt so good, and I groaned with the pleasure of it. But before long, he was pulling it out. He licked that finger and the one next to it, and then he pressed both of them into my pussy. But he didn’t push them inside until his tongue was back on my clit. The combination of his fingers and his tongue were driving me wild.

I was gasping and panting and moaning. I couldn’t form words if I wanted to. My fingers clenched. My whole body clenched.

He moved his fingers inside me, and I felt pressure building at my core. I didn’t know what was about to happen. I just knew that it felt amazing, and it felt like something more was coming.

And then come it did.

At the time, I had no word for it, but later, I learned the word orgasm. It was wild.

My toes curled, my muscles clenched—all of them. My pussy gripped his fingers, my hips bucked, my fingers dug into the pillows. And the cry that escaped my throat, I was sure, could be heard back in my building.

Who is going to take Mara’s virginity? Haha – you still don’t know because I removed his name!

R is for Religion

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

Zebulon is founded on equality and choice. Everyone is allowed to choose their own religions and they often share the public meeting spaces so they can worship in their own way. Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism, Buddhism, and many other religions exist. There are also people who are Agnostic or Athiest, and that’s okay, too. Religion is not something that is pushed on members of the community, and certainly their morals are not founded in religion but in community.

Above you see my description that I wrote based on the extensive questions in The A-Zs of Worldbuilding. Religion doesn’t take a large role in Exploration: An Erotic Novel, so here’s a random chapter! Enjoy an excerpt from Chapter 16.

My hands explored his muscles, then slipped around his back and held him to me. His lips pressed against mine, and our kiss became almost frantic. It wasn’t that slow exploration we had shared before. These kisses became short and breathless. He kissed down my jaw, behind my ear, then back again. I gasped and moaned and tried to capture his lips with my own.

When he found his way down my neck to my collar bone, he practically buried his face against my skin. I felt that there was just enough stubble on his chin to scrape against my skin, and it tingled and felt wonderful.

“Mara,” he practically moaned against me.

“Hmm?”

He pulled his face back just far enough that I could hear him clearly. “Can I take your virginity?” he asked.

Fuck yes, I thought, but I just nodded, biting my lip and feeling both nerves and excitement flood my senses.

“Are you sure?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said, sounding a hell of a lot more sure than I felt. But this is literally what I had picked him for. Even though he was a stranger, and this was the longest conversation we had ever had, I wanted it so much.

He kissed me again, his tongue probing my mouth. This kiss felt different, more tender, more full of emotion. It was like he was thanking me for trusting him.

I wrapped my hands around his neck and held him close to me, loving the way our skin felt pressed so close.

He broke the kiss and pulled back far enough that he could look into my eyes. “I am very excited to fuck you, Mara, but before I do, I want to make sure you are good and ready.”

I felt like I was ready. I wanted it. I didn’t know what all it would entail, and the rumor was that it might even hurt the first time, but I didn’t care. I wanted it. I was ready for it. But, it turns out, I had no idea what he meant by “good and ready” because I most certainly was not.

Q is for Queens

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

In Zebulon, each community elects representatives. These ten people go to meetings four times a year of all the buildings in the area. From the approximately 200 representatives, ten of them are elected to meet with representatives from the other cities. No one is in charge overall, and everything is done by committee. The representatives take turns running meetings. Representatives can only serve for three years, and then they must take a break. This is to ensure no one is in power for too long, and that no burns out from the extra travel and work. This excerpt will talk about one of the representatives.

We hadn’t sat there long before James switched off the TV and turned to look at me.

“What?” I asked him, my whole body tingling with nerves.

“I can teach you stuff,” he said, and then quickly added, “if you want.”

“Like what stuff?” I asked.

“Like about the toys they’re using, and the things they’re doing.” He wasn’t looking at me when he said it.

Was he interested in me as more than a friend? I hadn’t ever thought he was, but maybe… “You know I always want to learn, James,” I said, and my voice was barely above a whisper.

He took my hand in his and then pulled me to my feet. “Do you want to see?”

“See what?” I asked. He didn’t mean now? Was he going to show me something now?

He guided me over to the TV and the dresser it was sitting on. He opened the top drawer, and I felt my eyebrows practically hit my hairline. There was one of those plastic things from the video, among other things, all lined up neatly in the drawer.

“What is all this stuff?”

He took the items out one at a time, describing the functions of the ones he knew. He explained about dildos that didn’t vibrate, vibrators of various sizes, butt plugs in all shapes and sizes.

“Wait, does that go where it sounds like it goes?” I asked.

He nodded. “I’ve obviously never used one, but my brother says they can be fun.”

“Has he used one?” I whispered.

“He must have because he told me they’re fun.”

My eyes went wide as I looked at him. “What’s in the next drawer?”

He looked at his watch. “Um, we’ll have to wait until later to find out. We have to be down at the meeting!”

“What time is it?” I asked, looking for a clock in the room.

Oh fuck. We were already five minutes late.

James grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the room. He pressed the button for the elevator, which, of course, took forever. When the doors slid open, he waved his card and pressed the button for 1. He was still holding my hand, and I let him.

When the doors slid open on the first floor, he let go of my hand, and we ran around the corner to the meeting room. Thankfully, there were more chairs than residents, and we were able to grab a couple of chairs at the back of the room.

But then one of the elders spotted us and whispered, “You’re supposed to be up front!”

Oh shit. I forgot. As year 18s, we would be called forward to pick our careers. We slipped out of our seats and tried to make our way quietly down the side aisle. When we got near the front, we found that there were a few empty seats further up.

I noticed that our stern representative who was running the Matchmaking Ceremony this year was glowering at us. “Sorry, Lori,” I whispered, but I was sure she couldn’t hear me.

She was calling forward the year 16s, who would each be given a new room assignment. The rooms were labeled by building and floor, and each one would be a private room. It was the first time in their lives the year 16s really had any kind of privacy. I remembered my own ceremony and getting to know Jean and Carla. It was so exciting. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched the year 16s go forward when their names were called.

Then it was our turn. “I will now call forward the year 18s,” Lori said, “When I call your name, you will come forward and declare your career intentions. You will name your top two choices, and we will distribute you in whatever way will benefit the community the most.”

I knew this. I had heard this same speech every year, but this was the first time it applied to me. And what did I want to do? I had no idea. My mind was blank.

I waited impatiently for them to call my name. I was near the middle because they called us alphabetically. We only had one name. We were all part of the Zebulon community, and none of us had the same name, so a second or third name was unheard of. In history books, everyone had two or three names. It was a foreign concept to us.

James’ leg was bouncing next to me. I placed a hand on his knee, and he stopped bouncing and just looked at me. “I don’t know what to pick,” he whispered.

I didn’t know what to tell him. They were calling H names now. He wouldn’t have to wait much longer.

And then I heard his name called, and he went forward. I watched him walk, his movements so familiar. He got up onto the stage and went to the microphone.

“James, what is your first choice?” Lori asked.

“I would like to, uh, work with food.”

Lori cocked her head to the side. We all prepared our own food, and we all knew it, so the way he said that wasn’t right.

“I mean, like teaching kids.”

“Mentoring in cooking?” Lori asked.

“Yes,” he said, “yes.” I could see his shoulders sag in relief.

“And your second choice?” Lori asked.

“Uh,” he said. He had taken my suggestions for his first choice, which meant he hadn’t had any ideas of his own. “Maybe a police officer,” he said finally.

My own plight of figuring out what to say on my turn was momentarily erased. He had never, not one time, expressed interest in being a police officer. Emergency services were a tough job. Most people didn’t choose it lightly. Sure, the hours were the same as everyone else, but there was a lot of responsibility. And the physical fitness tests?

I looked at James, really looked at him. He wasn’t heavy, but he wasn’t fit either. He didn’t spend his recreation time at the gym. He spent it playing games and watching TV, same as me. We spent a lot of time playing card games, in fact. So to hear him say that he wanted to do something that was physically demanding was a shock.

While I watched him walk back to take his seat next to me, I didn’t even realize they had moved through the rest of the J’s and K’s, and Lori was calling, “Mara, please come forward.”

What will Mara pick?

What jobs do they end up getting?

P is for Plants

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

All food is plant-based, so agriculture is important. House-plants aren’t something that exists because they have no windows to allow for light. In their agricultural centers, the seed bank allowed them to grow all the same things that have been grown for centuries: strawberries, blueberries, apples, grapes, oranges, lemons, limes, potatoes, cucumbers, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and so on. But they aren’t all available all the time.

Many of them can be preserved by freezing so they are available all the time, but to be available fresh is always a treat.

Flowers that are grown for beauty are rare, but the seeds are preserved. Many of the vegetable and fruit plants also have flowers, though, and those are sometimes seen picked and put in water in public areas or dried for art or jewelry.

We were given a rudimentary overview of sex. I knew about the different body parts and the variety of genders and gender expressions. I knew that I could be in any number of different types of relationships. But I had no idea what the different types of relationships were.

On the top floor of all twenty residential buildings in our city was an Exploration Floor. It was filled with rooms designed for sexual expression and exploration. Some were private and others were public, but until today, my elevator pass wouldn’t let me up there. Finally, today I would be allowed up onto the 20th floor.

“Do you want some food?” James asked. I hadn’t realized that he had stood up and was looking down at me. I had been too wrapped up in my thoughts.

“Oh, uh,” I said, but my stomach was fluttering, and I wasn’t sure I would be able to keep down any food. “No, I think I’ll wait until after the ceremony.”

“Suit yourself,” he said. “I think I need some stamina to get through it.” He was smiling now, and I smiled back.

“I’ll join you in the kitchen, though,” I said.

I leaned back against the counter at the far side of the kitchen while he made himself some eggs and toast. The eggs came out of a carton and were synthetic. All of our food was plant-based, but it had been engineered to look, smell, and taste like the food of 600 years ago. I supposed the variety was nice, but no one I had ever spoken to had tasted a real chicken egg or even real chicken, so we weren’t missing out. It was one of those odd things passed down from generation to generation. No one could remember why it was important, but someone thought it was.

“You could teach cooking,” I said to James. He seemed so comfortable in the kitchen.

“Oh,” he replied, “I hadn’t thought of that.”

“Really?” I said. “You just seem so comfortable in the kitchen. Those are skills you could pass on.”

He nodded slowly. “I guess,” he said. “I never thought of myself as someone who would want to work with kids.”

“Well, they aren’t really kids,” I said. “Hell, we were those ‘kids’ yesterday.”

He laughed, but we both knew I was right. At 16, we were encouraged to take over all of our food preparations, but we would have a mentor who would help us. We actually started learning younger than that in the training centers, but we didn’t have access to our own kitchens until we were in our 16th year. James had taken to cooking easily, and our mentor hadn’t had to do a whole lot of work with him. I was a lost cause when it came to most food preparations, but I wouldn’t starve left to my own devices.

“How long do we have until the ceremony?” I asked, turning to look at the large clock on the wall.

“An hour,” James said. “Why?”

“Do you want to go up to the exploration floor and poke around?” I asked. My voice was barely above a whisper.

In fact, James didn’t respond for so long that I wasn’t sure he had heard me at all. But then he said, “Already?”

I blushed. “I tried to go up last night, but my elevator pass wouldn’t let me.”

He grinned at me. “Why am I not surprised, Mara? That floor is all you have talked about for the last month.”

“That’s not true!” I protested, but it wasn’t that far off from the truth.

He raised one eyebrow at me.

“So what if I’m curious. Are you coming or not?” I asked, and I took a few steps toward the elevator. The elevator was right in the center of every floor, so it was right in our kitchen.

“Damnit, Mara, let me finish my food at least!”

Children play a lot of games from before technology was A Thing. They play things like Red Rover, tag, Sharks and Minnows, and other games of the sort. They have indoor playgrounds where they can climb and run and play. Sports played on small courts have survived, like basketball and soccer (though on a smaller scale). Racquetball survived, and there are one or two courts in the gyms in buildings.

Other hobbies that have survived are craft projects like knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint, scrapbooking, games, and media. There is no satellite, but there are digital movies all have access to. New movies are rare, but they do a few new ones every year. Porn is a very common form of entertainment. Making it and viewing it are common.

Reading, writing, and music are also common pastimes.

“Are you coming?” he asked. “It’s the weekend. Aren’t you excited?”

I shrugged. I wasn’t. In fact, I felt a bit depressed about it. James was gone for at least two weeks yet. What would I do without him over the weekend? It had been so long since I had spent a weekend doing anything but hanging out with James. And who would cook for me? James was so good at it, and I just wasn’t. A whole weekend of nothing to look forward to except playing video games alone and cooking for myself. It just didn’t sound fun.

“Well, I’m out,” he said. “See you in a few days.”

“Bye,” I said, and I watched him walk out the door. Everyone else had packed up and left before Marchand, so I was alone now. Alone in this large room, with this huge bed. I lay on it, spreading my arms and legs out as far and wide as I could, taking up all the space possible. The air was a bit chilly, and my nipples perked up. If there had been a blanket handy, I would have grabbed it and covered myself with it so I could take a nap. I sighed.

I wondered if there was a blanket in one of the cabinets or drawers around the room. There probably was, but maybe a soak in the bath would be better. No one was looking for me back at my place, so why not.

I opened the door to the bathroom and turned on the heat lamps. Warmth flooded the small room almost immediately. I turned down the main lights and ran the bathwater. I sat in the tub, the water splashing around me. I kept turning the temperature up bit by bit until it was so hot I almost couldn’t stand it. When it was full enough, I turned off the tap and sat in the silence. Every little movement I made sent the sound of splashing water echoing around the room. I tried to stay as still as possible, barely breathing, but the water splashed anyway.

I had no idea how long I had been lying in the water, but it wasn’t particularly cold anymore. It was barely lukewarm. I drained some of the water and added more water, almost scalding hot.

I closed my eyes and let myself sink beneath the surface. It felt so good to be submerged. I couldn’t hold my breath for long, though, and when I surfaced, I nearly jumped out of my skin.

N is for Nuptuals

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

Nuptials are a thing of the past. Matchmakers put people together based on information gathered in the four years (from 18 to 22) young adults are living and exploring their world. At the end of that time, the Matchmakers match the people up in the best configurations. They may be matched with up to three other people and live as a family unit. There can be 1, 2, 3, or 4 adults living in a shared space. Individuals may choose to have their own quarters, or they can be in a relationship with someone who also has an individual unit.

Whatever type of relationship they end up in, the relationships are arranged. The Matchmakers decide who is best together, and there is no deviation from that. There is no marriage, so there’s no such thing as divorce. That being said, there is an opportunity once a year for a group or couple to decide to split.

The culture of the community has all but eradicated abuse. The mindset and close living of groups of people has made it impossible for abuse to occur, and when it did in the past, the abusers were kicked out of the community. The swift action of the time has meant that no one behaves that way. Surviving outside the community is all but impossible.

“Nothing that exciting,” he said. I waited for more. He didn’t disappoint. “I went through my four years of experimentation. I tried everything. But what I found was that I wasn’t all that interested in a steady relationship. It was a lot more fun to do different things with different people.”

“So why didn’t you tell them you wanted a poly relationship?” I asked. It was common for people to request multiple relationships. Monogamous people weren’t the norm. We shared food, resources, living spaces. Why wouldn’t we share sex, too?

“Because that’s not what I wanted either. I didn’t want multiple committed relationships. I just wanted to be free to do what I want.”

That seemed unusual. People who didn’t want relationships were often aromantic or asexual, but he was sexual for sure, and it appeared he might be romantic, too.

“What we have,” he said with a deep breath, “is perfect. We have a great time together.” I nodded in agreement. “But there’s no push to be more.” I nodded again, but I was a little bit less sure.

Was there no push for more? We were here, at dinner time, he made dinner for me. We spent the afternoon cuddling and napping. Work time was over, everyone else had left. He could have gone any time. And yet, here we were.

“I told the matchmakers all of this, and they let me be free.”

Who is “he”?

How does their relationship work?

M is for Military

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

This is a time of peace. Other countries aren’t communicating with Zebulon or the other cities. Everyone is basically keeping to themselves and trying to survive. With the nuclear winter, satellites fell into disrepair and aren’t available anymore. So, there is no way to communicate across continents anymore. The communities are happy staying the way they are, and no one has pushed for there to be contact outside the existing cities in a long time.

As such, a ‘military’ isn’t necessary. There are local officers who are partially there to keep the peace, but mostly they really just help with an emergency such as a medical issue where someone needs to be transported.

Above you see my description that I wrote based on the extensive questions in The A-Zs of Worldbuilding. Below, you can read an excerpt of Chapter 15 from Exploration: An Erotic Novel, available now! Since there isn’t a lot of military action, this excerpt is just for fun!

Chapter 15: The Meeting

I took a deep breath as I waited for the door to open. Nicole went into the bathroom and must have given Marchand instructions as well because the next thing I knew, Nicole was slipping out of the bathroom and behind the cameras. I realized that she had positioned them so that the cameras wouldn’t catch each other. One was focused on me, one was focused on the closed bathroom door, and I couldn’t see the third.

The door opened, and the man I had seen in pictures entered the room. He stepped confidently toward me.

“You must be Mara,” he said, and he smiled down at me.

“Hi,” I said, and my voice was light and breathy.

“I’m Marchand,” he said, and his name sounded even sexier on his lips.

He took my hand in his, and I thought he was going to shake it, but instead, he brought it to his lips and kissed it.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” he said.

He was so good at this. And here I was, practically mute. I licked my lips and swallowed, trying to get words to form. “T-thank you,” I finally got out, “it’s a pleasure to meet you,” I echoed his words.

“Would you like to sit down?” He didn’t wait for me to answer but started guiding me to one of the small couches in the room.

We sat down next to each other, and he slipped one arm around my shoulders. “Relax, Mara, I’m not going to hurt you.”

I smiled at him then. He was so easy going, so confident. “I didn’t think you would hurt me, Marchand,” I said almost at a whisper. I liked the way his name sounded from my lips, too. “You have such a beautiful name,” I blurted out.

He grinned, and I couldn’t help but be transfixed, looking at his full lips and perfect teeth. I wanted to know what those lips would feel like on mine. And…other places. “Thank you,” he said. “It was an old, old family name. Back when people had two names, it was a second name. Now it’s given to someone in my family every few generations.”

“I love it,” I said.

His fingers started playing with my braid, and he said, “Thank you,” again. Our eyes locked, and with his warm fingers playing with my hair, I felt a pull bringing us closer together. And then suddenly our lips met, and he was kissing me, his lips firm against mine, his tongue slipping between my lips.

How did she end up meeting Marchand?

What’s going to happen now?

Will he actually hurt her?

L is for Language

from Rebekah Loper’s book called The A-Zs of Worldbuilding: Building a Fictional World From Scratch

The language of Zebulon is English, but of course it has changed over the years. There are some words that are all but obsolete. Most animals can only be found in books. Cats are the only animals that have survived, and that was because they went down underground with the people. There were once a few dogs, but there weren’t enough to carry on the species. Other animals may exist outside the confines of the community, but no one sees them.

Otherwise, language is much as it once was. Although texting and pictures were once the primary mode of communication among young people, that technology didn’t exist for a long time, and has fallen out of favor. Living close together meant that it wasn’t necessary to communicate that way. In fact, children aren’t allowed personal devices until they turn 16, and then they are heavily restricted until they turn 18. At 18, the restrictions are lifted, but being glued to their technology isn’t the norm.

So, most of their communication happens face to face. Once a week meetings for each floor of their community buildings, and once a month meetings for each building are the norm. Four times a year, delegates from each building come together to discuss how things are going, and the host is rotated among buildings.

Chapter 19: Connection

I knew Marchand was right, but I didn’t want to admit it. I took a deep breath and tried to get my body to understand that this wasn’t going to be sexy time. The rush of feelings in the last 36 hours had been intense, and keeping my hands off of him was proving to be difficult.

“Can you call Nicole?”

“Yes,” he said, and he reached for his phone. I hadn’t even realized he had it in there. He hadn’t used it once in the time we were together. He fired off a text message and then wrapped his arms around my waist.

“You had better let me go, Marchand,” I said. My voice was choked.

He did, and I moved so that I was sitting next to him instead of on top of him. “So,” he said, “do you have any brothers or sisters?”

I blinked at him a few times. My brain was having trouble keeping up with the topic change. “No, my parents only had me.”

He nodded but didn’t volunteer any information.

“Do you have any brothers or sisters?”

“Yeah,” he said, “I have an older brother and a younger sister.”

“Oh really?” I said, my interest piqued. “How old is your sister?”

“She’s a year 17.”

“So, she’s getting ready to do what I’m doing,” I said without thinking.

“Well,” he chuckled, “not exactly what you’re doing.”

I blushed hard. “That’s not— I meant—”

He laughed and brushed his fingertips along my jaw. “I’m just teasing you, Mara.”

My skin tingled where he touched me, and I was thinking about climbing back into his lap when his phone dinged. He reached for it, and I held my breath, waiting for what he was going to say.

“Nicole said to give her half an hour, and she’ll get cameras here.”

I blinked. Half an hour. That was so long. Way too long to sit in this bathtub. “We should get out of the tub,” I said.

“Yeah,” he agreed. He got out first and picked up a towel. I expected him to wrap it around himself, but instead, he motioned for me to get out. I did, and he wrapped me in the fluffy cloth. I shivered just a little, but before I knew it, he had wrapped his body around me. He kissed me lightly on the side of the neck, and my knees started to buckle. “Woah there,” he said, and he picked me up and carried me into the bedroom. He set me down gently on one of the couches and went back for the camera. When he had it set up, he sat down on the couch next to me but made sure he was far enough away that we weren’t touching.

“This is torture,” I said.

“I know,” he replied. We sat in silence for a minute, and then he said, “Let’s talk about something.”

“Such as?”

“Anything.”

Why do they need Nicole and the cameras?

What are they going to talk about?

And what will they do once the cameras arrive?
